Preparing the surface

A good start is half the battle: preparing the subfloor

Whether you're working with renovation mortar, repair mortar, or self-leveling compound, your job always begins with preparing the subfloor. Of course, you don't just slap on a primer. Preparing the subfloor starts with observing, observing, and observing again. Because what exactly are you dealing with?

Identify potential tensions in the subfloor

Take a look around with a structural eye. Does the floor have expansion joints or not? Identify any contamination, such as oil or paint. Take stock of cracks, holes, loose parts, and other damages. The surroundings are also important. Walls, partitions, and windows can affect the current state of the subfloor, as well as future tensions.

Create a plan to prepare the subfloor

Based on your assessment, create a plan for the next steps. If you don't have experience or time for this, Omnicol Flooring can create a tailored advisory plan for you! First question: will it be priming or uncoupling? With uncoupling, you apply an intermediate layer due to cracks or additional reinforcement, making you independent of your subfloor. However, a primer requires a workable subfloor, so remove all loose parts. The next step is sanding, blasting, or milling. You are now ready for the next phase. And yes, all these preparations may have taken eighty percent of the total working time, but they are also eighty percent of your successful end result.
