Applying primer

No flooring project can be started without a primer.

A primer is essential before applying leveling and screed floor mortars. This makes porous surfaces less absorbent, and smooth and closed surfaces provide more adhesion. This also ensures better flow and adhesion of the next layer, prevents air bubbles, and binds the residual material.

Work dust-free, measure humidity and check temperature

When preparing the surface, there is a good chance that you have either sanded, sand-blasted or grinded the floor. Although this has removed dirt, it has also produced a lot of dust. In this case we advise not to sweep with a broom, because it will not pick up everything and may even contribute to further spread of contaminant. It is better to use a vacuum cleaner to carefully remove dust from the floor. Also take the time to measure the environmental values. Consider the humidity, and the temperatures of the air, substrate, mortar, and primer. Also consider the possible effects of windows and doors, such as incoming (solar) heat, drafts, (mechanical) ventilation and even wind.

Prime until the surface is saturated.

To start, prime one or more times until the surface is saturated with the chosen primer. You can recognize this saturation by an even, matte shine without spots. Don't hesitate to pour a few layers if necessary. This is crucial for optimal results: apply the primer crosswise to achieve even lines.

Do this from front to back and then from left to right. This way there is the least chance that you will forget something. In addition, we advise you to prime as soon as possible before leveling, in particular to prevent new building dust.
